Surah Al-Fatiha: The Opening
A deep dive into the first chapter of the Quran — the foundation of every prayer.
Understand the meaning, themes, and significance of Surah Al-Fatiha in daily prayer and Islamic theology.
Surah Al-Fatiha is the opening chapter of the Quran and is recited in every unit (rak'ah) of prayer. It is called 'Umm al-Kitab' (Mother of the Book) and 'Al-Sab' al-Mathani' (the Seven Oft-Repeated). The surah begins with praising Allah (Alhamdulillah), acknowledges Him as the Lord of all worlds, the Most Merciful, the Master of the Day of Judgment. Then it declares worship and seeking help only from Allah. Finally, it asks for guidance to the straight path — the path of those who earned Allah's favor, not those who went astray. This surah summarizes the entire message of the Quran: Tawheed (oneness of Allah), worship, seeking help, and guidance. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah responds to each verse as the servant recites it.
