People of the Cave

People of the Cave

Aṣḥāb al-Kahf — Sūrah 18

1

The believing youths

A group of young men in a city of idolaters held firm to monotheism and refused to worship anything but Allah. Their king, Diqyānūs, persecuted those who would not worship idols.

18:13–14

2

Taking refuge in the cave

They said, «Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and earth; we will not call upon any deity besides Him.» They retreated to a cave to protect their faith and honor.

18:16

3

The sleep

Allah cast sleep over them for 309 years — they turned from right to left while their dog, Qīṭmīr, lay at the threshold with paws outstretched.

18:18, 18:25

4

The sun and the cave

«You would see the sun, as it rose, inclining away from their cave on the right, and as it set, passing away from them on the left» — a sign of Allah's gentle protection.

18:17

5

The debate over their number

People disputed: three, four, or five; or seven or eight. Allah said, «My Lord knows best their number. Do not debate about them except with clear proof, and do not ask anyone about them.»

18:22

6

The waking

Allah awakened them after centuries. They sent one of them with money to buy food, but the coins were ancient and the town had changed — a city now in the worship of Allah alone.

18:19–21

7

The lesson

«They stayed in their cave three hundred years, adding nine.» — A sign that Allah resurrects the dead and protects the believers, even across the span of ages.

18:25

Lessons

  • Tawakkul — trusting Allah protects those who fear Him and abandon sin for His sake.
  • The youths prioritized their faith over comfort, status, and safety — a model for every generation.
  • Allah concealed the exact number to teach humility — «Say: My Lord knows best their number.»
  • The dog that kept their company was honored by being mentioned in the Quran — the honor of keeping company with the righteous.
  • The passage of time did not weaken their faith; Allah's protection spans generations.
  • They were a test for the people of the city — would they accept the power of resurrection, or dispute it in ignorance?
  • The exact duration — 300 years plus 9 in the solar calendar — underscores the precision of revelation.
