Tafsir of al-Fātiḥah

Tafsir of al-Fātiḥah

Verse-by-verse breakdown of the Opening

The Seven Verses

11:1

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. Begins every action with seeking Allah's help and mercy. The Basmalah is recited before every surah except Surah at-Tawbah (9).

21:2

All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds. True praise belongs to Him alone, the Creator and Sustainer of all that exists — the world of humans, jinn, angels, animals, and all creation.

31:3

The Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. His mercy encompasses all creation and is the reason we hope in Him. Ar-Raḥmān is vast, general to all; ar-Raḥīm is specific, for the believers.

41:4, 40:16

Master of the Day of Judgement. On that day, sovereignty belongs to Him alone — no one will speak except by His permission. «Whose is the kingdom this Day? Allah's, the One, the Supreme.»

51:5

You alone we worship, You alone we ask for help. The core of the surah — pure worship (tawḥīd) and total reliance on Allah (tawakkul). The «we» joins the worshipper to the Ummah.

61:6

Guide us to the straight path. The most comprehensive duʿā — guidance in every matter of life and faith, to remain firm on Islam until death.

71:7

The path of those You have blessed, not those who earned Your anger (the Jews, who knew but rejected), nor the astray (the Christians, who lost the truth entirely). Three groups: the blessed, the knowledgeable-rejecters, and the lost.

Virtues

The greatest surah

«I will teach you the greatest surah in the Quran» — the Prophet ﷺ then recited al-Fātiḥah: «Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds…»

Bukhārī

Seven oft-repeated

«We have given you seven of the oft-repeated (al-mathānī) and the great Quran» — al-Fātiḥah is the seven oft-repeated verses.

15:87, Bukhārī

A cure

It is a ruqyah — healing for physical and spiritual ailments. The Prophet ﷺ used it to heal a companion stung by a scorpion, and as healing for the sick.

Bukhārī

No prayer without it

«No prayer is valid for one who does not recite the Opening of the Book» — it is recited in every rakʿah of every obligatory and voluntary prayer.

Bukhārī & Muslim

A conversation with Allah

«I have divided the prayer between Me and My servant into two halves» — every verse is answered by Allah directly. «My servant has praised Me» at al-ḥamd, «My servant has extolled Me» at ar-Raḥmān ar-Raḥīm, «My servant has glorified Me» at Mālik yawm ad-dīn.

Muslim

The mother of the Book

It is called Umm al-Kitāb — the mother of the Book — because it contains the themes of the entire Quran: tawḥīd, worship, mercy, the Hereafter, and guidance.
