The Reality of Death
The certainty of death
«Every soul will taste death, and you will be paid your reward in full on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever is removed from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has succeeded — the life of this world is only a deceiving enjoyment.»

No delay or advancement
«When its term comes, it is not delayed or advanced by an hour.»

The appointed time is hidden
No one knows when their term will come — so prepare while you can. «No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, or what land it will die in.»

Remembering death often
«Frequently remember the destroyer of pleasures — death.»

«Do not think those killed in the path of Allah are dead — they are alive, provided for by their Lord.»

The Stage of the Grave
The soul's meeting
When a believer dies, his soul meets the souls of the righteous who welcome him as a traveler welcomed home. They ask: What did so-and-so do? Did he come?

The questioning
Two angels (Munkar and Nakīr) seat the deceased and ask: Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet? The believer answers: My Lord is Allah, my religion Islam, my Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

The believer's grave
For the believer the grave is a garden of Paradise; a window to Paradise is opened and its breeze comes to him. His deeds take form and console him.

The disbeliever's grave
For the wrongdoer the grave is a pit of Fire; a window to Hell is opened and its heat reaches him. His deeds come in a hated form and torment him.

«When a person dies, his deeds end except three: continuous charity, beneficial knowledge, and a righteous child who prays for him.»

The compression of the grave
The grave compresses the servant — even the righteous are tested, then expanded. The Prophet ﷺ's daughter was squeezed until she let out a breath.

Settle debts
«The believer's soul is suspended by his debt until it is paid on his behalf.»

Write a will
«It is prescribed for a Muslim who has something to bequeath not to let two nights pass without having his will written with him.»

Leave good behind
Leave ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, and righteous children who will pray for you after death.

Repent before it is too late
Repentance at the moment of death is not accepted — so turn back to Allah while the door is open.

Be ready to meet Allah
«Take five from your life before five: your youth before old age, your health before sickness, your wealth before poverty, your free time before occupation, your life before death.»

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ
For the dying
There is no deity but Allah — prompt the dying to say it. Whoever's last words are these enters Paradise.

اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى غَمَرَاتِ الْمَوْتِ وَسَكَرَاتِهِ
When closing the eyes
O Allah, help me through the agonies of death and its throes.

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ
For the deceased
O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, give him wellbeing, and pardon him.
Muslim
اللَّهُمَّ ثَبِّتْهُ عِنْدَ السُّؤَالِ
At the grave
O Allah, make him firm at the questioning.
