The Quran's Compilation and Preservation
Learn how the Quran was compiled, preserved, and transmitted through generations.
The Quran is the only religious text preserved perfectly from the time of revelation to today. Allah says: Indeed, it is We who sent down the Quran and indeed, We will be its guardian. During the Prophet's lifetime, the Quran was memorized by companions and written on parchment, bones, and palm leaves. After the Prophet's death, Abu Bakr (RA) ordered the compilation of the Quran into one book, fearing that memorizers might be lost in battle. Zayd ibn Thabit (RA) led this effort. Later, during Uthman's (RA) caliphate, different dialects emerged, so he standardized the Quran into one official copy and sent it to all Muslim regions. The Quran has 114 Surahs, 6,236 verses, and 86,430 words. It was revealed over 23 years — 13 in Makkah and 10 in Madinah. The Makkan Surahs focus on Tawhid (oneness of Allah) and the Hereafter, while the Madinan Surahs focus on laws, society, and worship. The Quran has never been changed — not a single letter! Millions of Muslims memorize it today (Hafiz), and this oral transmission, combined with written copies, ensures its preservation for all time. No other book in history has been preserved so perfectly.
Qur'an Verses
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ
Inna nahnu nazzalna adh-dhikra wa inna lahu la-hafizun
Translation: Indeed, it is We who sent down the Quran and indeed, We will be its guardian.
