Sleeping and Waking Up with Allah

Learn the beautiful things we say when we sleep and when we wake up.

Lesson & Story

Every night when we go to sleep and every morning when we wake up, we should remember Allah! Before sleeping, the Prophet ﷺ taught us to say: Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya — In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live. When we wake up, we say: Alhamdulillah alladhi ahyana — Praise be to Allah who gave us life. Did you know that sleep is like a mini death? When we sleep, Allah takes our souls, and when we wake up, He gives them back! So every morning is like a new life. We should thank Allah for waking us up. The Prophet ﷺ also taught us to read the last three Surahs of the Quran (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) before sleeping. He also said to say SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 34 times. Sleeping and waking up with Allah's remembrance brings peace, protection, and good dreams!

Qur'an Verses

Surah Az-Zumar (39:42) · Ayah 42

اللَّهُ يَتَوَفَّى الْأَنفُسَ حِينَ مَوْتِهَا وَالَّتِي لَمْ تَمُتْ فِي مَنَامِهَا

Allahu yatawaffa al-anfusa hina mawtiha wa allati lam tamut fi manamiha

Translation: Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep.
