Being Thankful (Shukr) - Gratitude to Allah

Learn about Shukr — being grateful to Allah for all His blessings.

Lesson & Story

Shukr means being grateful to Allah for everything He gives us. Allah says in the Quran: If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]. But if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe. This means when we say Alhamdulillah and are thankful, Allah gives us even more! The Prophet ﷺ said: Look at those below you and do not look at those above you, for it is more likely to keep you from despising Allah's favors. How do we show gratitude? 1. Say Alhamdulillah often. 2. Use Allah's blessings to do good (like using your health to pray, your wealth to give charity, your knowledge to teach). 3. Don't waste Allah's blessings. 4. Help others with what Allah gave you. The Prophet ﷺ prayed so long at night that his feet would swell. When Aisha (RA) asked him why, he said: Should I not be a grateful servant? Even the Prophet ﷺ, whose sins were forgiven, showed gratitude to Allah through extra worship!

Qur'an Verses

Surah Ibrahim (14:7) · Ayah 7

لَئِن شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ

La-in shakartum la-azidannakum

Translation: If you are grateful, I will surely increase you.

Authentic Hadith
