Respecting Elders in Islam
Learn about the importance of respecting elders and teachers in Islam.
Islam teaches us to respect our elders! The Prophet ﷺ said: He is not one of us who does not have mercy on our young and does not respect our elders. This means respecting older people is part of being a good Muslim! The Prophet ﷺ also said: Jibril kept advising me about treating neighbors well until I thought he would make them heirs. Respecting elders means: 1. Let them speak first and listen carefully. 2. Don't interrupt them. 3. Help them when they need help. 4. Stand up to greet them. 5. Call them by respectful names. 6. Visit them and check on them. The Prophet ﷺ said: The one who does not show mercy to our young and does not respect our elders is not from us. When you see an older person, smile at them, help them, and listen to them. Their wisdom comes from years of experience, and Allah loves those who respect their elders!
