The Rightly Guided Caliphs - Al-Khulafa' al-Rashidun

Learn about the four caliphs who led the Muslim Ummah after the Prophet ﷺ.

Lesson & Story

After the death of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the Muslim community was led by four caliphs who are known as the Rightly Guided Caliphs (Al-Khulafa' al-Rashidun). They are: 1. Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (RA) — ruled 2 years (632-634 CE). He compiled the Quran, fought the false prophets, and established stability. 2. Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) — ruled 10 years (634-644 CE). He established the Islamic calendar, conquered Persia, Egypt, and Syria, and was known for his justice. 3. Uthman ibn Affan (RA) — ruled 12 years (644-656 CE). He standardized the Quran into one book and expanded the Islamic empire. 4. Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) — ruled 5 years (656-661 CE). He was known for his wisdom, courage, and justice. The Prophet ﷺ said: The caliphate after me will be thirty years, then it will become a kingdom. The period of the Rightly Guided Caliphs is considered the golden age of Islamic governance, where justice, consultation (Shura), and adherence to the Quran and Sunnah were the foundation of leadership.

Surah At-Tawbah (9:100) · Ayah 100

وَالسَّابِقُونَ الْأَوَّلُونَ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنصَارِ وَالَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُم بِإِحْسَانٍ

Wa as-sabiquna al-awwaluna mina al-muhajirina wa al-ansari wa alladhina ittaba'uhum bi-ihsan

Translation: And the first forerunners among the Muhajirin and the Ansar and those who followed them in good.
