The Science of Hadith - Preserving the Words of the Prophet

Learn how Islamic scholars preserved and authenticated the sayings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Lección e Historia

The Science of Hadith (Ilm al-Hadith) is one of the greatest achievements of Islamic civilization. After the Quran, the Hadith (sayings, actions, and approvals of the Prophet ﷺ) are the most important source of Islamic law and guidance. Scholars developed a rigorous system to authenticate every single hadith. A hadith has two parts: the Sanad (chain of narrators) and the Matn (text). Scholars examined each narrator in the chain — their memory, honesty, piety, and historical accuracy. Hadiths are classified by authenticity: Sahih (authentic), Hasan (good), Da'if (weak), and Maudu' (fabricated). The most authentic collections are the Six Books (Sihah Sittah): Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawud, Sunan at-Tirmidhi, Sunan an-Nasa'i, and Sunan Ibn Majah. Imam al-Bukhari spent 16 years compiling his collection, examining over 600,000 hadiths and selecting only about 7,000 authentic ones. He prayed two rak'ahs before including each hadith. The Prophet ﷺ said: May Allah brighten the face of a person who hears my hadith, memorizes it, and conveys it as they heard it.
