Allah Made the Stars and the Moon

Learn about the beautiful sky Allah created for us.

Lesson & Story

Allah made the beautiful sky! He put the sun to give us light during the day and the moon and stars to give us light at night. Allah says in the Quran: It is Allah who made for you the night that you may rest in it, and the day giving sight. The sun is like a big lamp that warms the earth. The moon changes shape — sometimes it is big and round, and sometimes it is a tiny crescent. Muslims look for the new moon to know when Ramadan and Eid begin! The stars twinkle in the sky like diamonds. Allah made all of them to help us find our way and to remind us of His power. Every time you look at the stars, remember: Allah made every single one of them, and He knows each star by name!

Qur'an Verses

Surah Nuh (71:16) · Ayah 16

وَجَعَلَ الْقَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُورًا وَجَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ سِرَاجًا

Wa ja'ala al-qamara fihinna nuran wa ja'ala ash-shamsa siraja

Translation: And made the moon therein a light and made the sun a burning lamp.

Authentic Hadith

Sahih al-Bukhari 1044 & Sahih Muslim 911

The Prophet said: The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death or life of anyone. So when you see them, call upon Allah and pray.

Explanation

This hadith teaches us that the sun and moon follow Allah's commands. When we see an eclipse, we should pray and remember Allah's power.
