Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha - The Two Celebrations

Learn about the two special holidays Muslims celebrate every year.

Lesson & Story

Muslims have two special holidays called Eid. Eid al-Fitr is celebrated at the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. On Eid al-Fitr, we wake up early, take a bath, wear our best clothes, and go to the mosque for a special Eid prayer. We give charity (Zakat al-Fitr) to the poor before the prayer. We visit family and friends, eat special food, and give gifts to children. Eid al-Adha is celebrated during the Hajj, remembering Prophet Ibrahim's (AS) willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail. On Eid al-Adha, Muslims who can afford it sacrifice an animal (sheep, goat, cow, or camel) and share the meat with family, friends, and the poor. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Every nation has its festival, and this is your festival.' On both Eids, Muslims say 'Eid Mubarak' to each other, meaning 'Blessed Eid.' Eid is a time of happiness, gratitude, and togetherness.

Qur'an Verses

Wa li-tukmilu al-'iddata wa li-tukabbiru Allaha 'ala ma hadakum

Translation: And that you may complete the prescribed period and glorify Allah for having guided you.
