Husayn ibn Ali (RA) - The Martyr of Karbala
Learn about Husayn (RA), the Prophet's grandson who stood for truth until his last breath.
Husayn ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was the grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, the younger son of Ali and Fatima (RA). The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Husayn is from me and I am from Husayn. Allah loves whoever loves Husayn.' Husayn (RA) was known for his bravery, piety, and devotion to the truth. After the death of Mu'awiyah, Husayn was invited by the people of Kufa (Iraq) to come and lead them against Yazid, whose rule was unjust. Husayn (RA) set out for Kufa with his family and a small group of supporters. But the people of Kufa broke their promise. Husayn and his small group of 72 companions were surrounded by an army of thousands at Karbala (in modern-day Iraq). They were denied water for three days. On the 10th of Muharram (Ashura), Husayn (RA) and his companions fought bravely against overwhelming odds. Husayn (RA) was martyred, along with his family members, including his infant son. Despite the tragedy, Husayn's stand at Karbala became a symbol of standing for truth against injustice, no matter the cost. The Prophet ﷺ had once said: 'Hasan and Husayn are the chiefs of the youth of Paradise.' Husayn (RA) chose death with honor over life with injustice. His sacrifice is remembered every year by Muslims around the world.
