Suhayb ar-Rumi (RA) - The Roman with a Pure Heart
Learn about Suhayb (RA), who sacrificed all his wealth for Islam.
Suhayb ar-Rumi (may Allah be pleased with him) was born in Iraq but grew up in the Byzantine (Roman) Empire after being captured as a child. He was known as 'ar-Rumi' (the Roman) because of his upbringing among the Romans. After accepting Islam, Suhayb (RA) was a devoted companion. When he decided to migrate to Madinah, the Quraysh tried to stop him. Suhayb said: 'I have reached old age in your midst, and I was your companion in arms. If I fight you, I will kill you. But if you let me go, I will give you all my wealth.' They agreed. Suhayb gave away everything he had and left for Madinah with nothing. When the Prophet ﷺ heard about this, he was overjoyed and said: 'The transaction has been profitable, O Abu Yahya! The transaction has been profitable!' This became a famous statement showing that sacrificing wealth for Allah's sake is the most profitable trade. Suhayb (RA) was known for his generosity, his beautiful recitation of the Quran, and his deep faith. The Prophet ﷺ appointed him to lead the prayer in Madinah while Umar (RA) was on his deathbed. After Umar's death, Suhayb led the Muslims in prayer until Uthman (RA) was chosen as caliph.
