Abu Hurayrah (RA) - The Guardian of Hadith

Learn about Abu Hurayrah (RA), the companion who narrated the most hadiths.

Lesson & Story

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is the most prolific narrator of hadith in all of Islam — he narrated over 5,000 hadiths. His real name was Abdur-Rahman ibn Sakhr, but the Prophet ﷺ nicknamed him 'Abu Hurayrah' (Father of the Kitten) because he loved cats and often carried a small cat with him. Abu Hurayrah (RA) devoted himself to learning from the Prophet ﷺ. While other companions went about their trade and business, Abu Hurayrah would stay with the Prophet constantly, memorizing everything he said. He once complained to the Prophet that he forgot things. The Prophet ﷺ told him: 'Spread your garment.' Abu Hurayrah spread his garment, the Prophet made a motion with his hand as if putting something in it, and told him: 'Wrap it.' After that, Abu Hurayrah never forgot a single hadith. Despite his vast knowledge, Abu Hurayrah (RA) lived in poverty. He often fainted from hunger. Once, he was so hungry he sat on the road waiting for someone to pass by and help him. Abu Bakr and Umar passed by but didn't understand his situation. Finally, the Prophet ﷺ noticed and took him home, where he found only a cup of milk. The Prophet shared it with Abu Hurayrah and his entire family, and it was enough for everyone — a miracle. Abu Hurayrah (RA) later became the governor of Madinah and taught hadith to thousands of students.
