Sa'd ibn Mu'adh (RA) - The Chief of Aws

Learn about Sa'd ibn Mu'adh (RA), whose death caused the Throne of Allah to shake.

Lesson & Story

Sa'd ibn Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) was the chief of the Aws tribe in Madinah. He was a tall, handsome, and respected leader. When Mus'ab ibn Umayr (RA) came to Madinah to teach Islam, Sa'd was initially skeptical. But after listening to the Quran, his heart softened, and he accepted Islam along with his entire tribe. Sa'd (RA) became one of the most devoted companions. At the Battle of Badr, he was chosen as the standard-bearer of the Ansar. At the Battle of Khandaq (Trench), Sa'd (RA) was struck by an arrow and severely wounded. While he was recovering, the Banu Qurayza (a Jewish tribe who had betrayed the Muslims) were judged. Sa'd was chosen as the judge because both parties agreed to his judgment. Despite his wounds, Sa'd gave a just ruling based on Islamic law. Shortly after, Sa'd (RA) passed away from his wounds. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The Throne of the Most Merciful shook for the death of Sa'd ibn Mu'adh.' This extraordinary statement shows how beloved Sa'd was to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ also said: 'Every grave will be widened for its occupant except the grave of Sa'd — it was squeezed until his ribs interlocked.' At his funeral, 70,000 angels attended, as the Prophet ﷺ mentioned.
