Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf (RA) - The Trader of Paradise

Learn about Abdur-Rahman (RA), known for his immense generosity and business success.

Lesson & Story

Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) was one of the earliest Muslims and one of the ten companions promised Paradise. His original name was Abd Amr; the Prophet ﷺ renamed him Abdur-Rahman. When he migrated to Madinah, the Ansar (helpers) offered to share their wealth and wives with him. Abdur-Rahman politely declined, asking only to be shown the marketplace. He started trading and, with Allah's blessing, became one of the wealthiest companions. Despite his wealth, Abdur-Rahman was extremely generous. He once gave 40,000 dinars in charity. He donated his entire caravan of 700 camels loaded with food to the cause of Allah. When a famine came, he gave away his wealth to feed the poor. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The best of charitable people is Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf.' He was so generous that when he passed away, his wives, relatives, and the poor all received significant inheritance. He left behind so much wealth that his four wives each received 80,000 dinars. Despite his immense wealth, Abdur-Rahman lived humbly and worshipped Allah devotedly. He was also a brave warrior who fought in all the major battles.
