Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (RA) - The Voice of Truth
Learn about Abu Dharr (RA), known for his honesty, simplicity, and courage to speak truth.
Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) was one of the earliest companions to accept Islam. His real name was Jundab ibn Junadah. He was from the tribe of Ghifar, a tribe known for raiding caravans. When Abu Dharr heard about the Prophet ﷺ, he traveled to Makkah to meet him. After accepting Islam, he boldly went to the Ka'bah and announced his faith in front of the Quraysh, who beat him severely. The Prophet ﷺ later told him: 'Go back to your people and call them to Islam.' Abu Dharr (RA) was known for his extreme simplicity and rejection of worldly wealth. He lived in a simple hut, wore rough clothes, and had almost no possessions. He would often say: 'My friend (the Prophet) advised me to do seven things...' including loving the poor and being near to them. Once, a man came to meet Abu Dharr and was surprised by his simple living. Abu Dharr said: 'My house has two doors, but my friend's house has one door.' He was referring to the Prophet's even simpler life. The Prophet ﷺ said about Abu Dharr: 'May Allah have mercy on Abu Dharr. He walks alone, dies alone, and will be raised alone.' This prophecy came true — Abu Dharr died alone in the desert of al-Rabadha, where he was found by travelers.
