Khalid ibn al-Walid (RA) - Sayfullah (Sword of Allah)

Learn about Khalid ibn al-Walid (RA), the greatest military commander in Islamic history.

Lesson & Story

Khalid ibn al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) was one of the greatest military commanders in history. Before accepting Islam, he fought against the Muslims at the Battle of Uhud, where the Muslims suffered defeat. But after the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, Khalid accepted Islam. The Prophet ﷺ gave him the title 'Sayfullah' — the Sword of Allah. Khalid (RA) never lost a battle in his entire life — over 100 battles. He was brilliant, courageous, and strategic. At the Battle of Mu'tah, when the three commanders appointed by the Prophet were martyred, Khalid took command and saved the Muslim army from a much larger Roman force. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Some of Allah's swords have been drawn, and they will not be sheathed until Allah gives victory.' During the caliphate of Abu Bakr, Khalid led the Muslims to victory against the false prophet Musaylimah and conquered Persia. Despite his military genius, Khalid was humble. When Umar (RA) removed him from command (for political reasons), Khalid accepted without complaint, saying: 'I did not fight for Umar, I fought for Allah.' When Khalid died, he said: 'I have participated in so many battles, and there is not a span of my body that does not have a scar from a sword, spear, or arrow. And here I am, dying on my bed like a camel. May the eyes of cowards never rest.'

Qur'an Verses

Surah Al-Anfal (8:15) · Ayah 15

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا لَقِيتُمُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا زَحْفًا فَلَا تُوَلُّوهُمُ الْأَدْبَارَ

Ya ayyuha alladhina amanu idha laqitumu alladhina kafaru zahfan fala tuwalluhumu adbar

Translation: O you who believe, when you meet those who disbelieve marching [for battle], do not turn to them your backs.
