Prophet Yunus (AS) - The Man and the Whale
Learn about Prophet Yunus (AS), his patience inside the whale, and the power of his du'a.
Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him) was sent to the people of Nineveh (in modern-day Iraq). He called them to Allah, but they rejected him. Yunus (AS) became frustrated and left his people before Allah's command came. He boarded a ship, and a great storm arose. The sailors decided to throw someone overboard to lighten the ship, and Yunus was chosen by lot. He was thrown into the sea, where a huge whale swallowed him. Inside the whale's belly, in complete darkness, Yunus (AS) realized his mistake and turned to Allah with a beautiful du'a: 'La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimin' — 'There is no god but You, glory to You, indeed I was among the wrongdoers.' Allah, the Most Merciful, accepted his repentance. The whale spat Yunus onto the shore, weak and ill. Allah caused a plant to grow over him for shade. When he recovered, Allah sent him back to his people. This time, over 100,000 people believed in him. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'No one should say I am better than Yunus.' This shows Yunus's high status despite his mistake — because he repented sincerely.
