Prophet Yaqub (AS) - The Father of Tribes

Learn about Prophet Yaqub (AS), his patience, and his role as the father of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Lesson & Story

Prophet Yaqub (peace be upon him), also known as Israel, was the son of Ishaq (AS) and the grandson of Ibrahim (AS). He was a prophet of Allah. His name 'Israel' means 'servant of Allah.' Yaqub (AS) had twelve sons, who became the founders of the twelve tribes of Israel. His most beloved son was Yusuf (AS). Yaqub (AS) is known for his incredible patience. When Yusuf's brothers threw Yusuf into a well and told Yaqub that a wolf ate him, Yaqub was devastated but remained patient. He said: 'So patience is most fitting.' He continued to believe in Allah and never lost hope. Years later, when Yusuf became a minister in Egypt, Yaqub's patience was rewarded — his family was reunited. Yaqub (AS) on his deathbed advised his sons to worship Allah alone. The Quran mentions Yaqub as a prophet who was guided by Allah and given special mercy.

Translation: I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah.

Surah Ghafir (40:34) · Ayah 34

وَلَقَدْ جَاءَكُمْ يُوسُفُ مِن قَبْلُ بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ

Wa-laqad ja'akum Yusuf min qablu bil-bayyinat

Translation: And certainly did Yusuf come to you before with clear proofs.

Authentic Hadith

Sahih Muslim 2999

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'How wonderful is the case of a believer! There is good for him in whatever happens to him — if he experiences prosperity, he is grateful, and that is good for him; and if adversity falls on him, he is patient, and that is good for him.'
