In Islam, good character (Akhlaq) is not just about being nice — it is a fundamental part of faith. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'I have been sent to perfect good character.' (Musnad Ahmad). This means that the entire purpose of the Prophet's mission was to teach and demonstrate beautiful character. Aisha (RA), the Prophet's wife, was once asked about the Prophet's character. She replied: 'His character was the Quran.' (Sahih Muslim). This means the Prophet ﷺ embodied every good quality that the Quran teaches — honesty, kindness, patience, generosity, humility, justice, mercy, and forgiveness. Key aspects of Islamic character include: 1. Truthfulness (Sidq): The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A person continues to tell the truth until they are written with Allah as a truthful one (Siddiq).' (Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim) 2. Kindness to Parents: Allah commands in the Quran: 'And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment.' (Surah Al-Isra 17:23). The Prophet ﷺ was asked: 'Which action is most beloved to Allah?' He said: 'Prayer on time.' Then he was asked: 'Then what?' He said: 'Kindness to parents.' (Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim) 3. Controlling Anger: The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The strong person is not the one who can wrestle someone, but the one who controls himself when angry.' (Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim) 4. Forgiveness: Allah says: 'And let them pardon and overlook. Do you not like that Allah should forgive you?' (Surah An-Nur 24:22). The Prophet ﷺ forgave the people of Makkah when he conquered it, even though they had persecuted him for years. 5. Humility: The Prophet ﷺ said: 'No one humbles themselves for Allah except that Allah raises them.' (Sahih Muslim). The Prophet ﷺ despite being the leader of Arabia, mended his own clothes, helped with household chores, and sat with the poor. 6. Keeping Secrets: A Muslim is trustworthy. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'A gathering is a trust.' (Sunan Abi Dawud). If someone shares something private, it is a trust that must be kept. 7. Greeting with Salam: The Prophet ﷺ said: 'You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I tell you something that will make you love one another? Spread the salam (greeting of peace) among you.' (Sahih Muslim) 8. Removing Harm: The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Removing harmful things from the road is an act of charity.' (Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim) Good character is so important that it can be the reason a person enters Paradise. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The most beloved of you to me and the closest to me on the Day of Resurrection will be the best of you in character.' (Sunan at-Tirmidhi, Hasan).
Qur'an Verses
وَقُولُوا لِلنَّاسِ حُسْنًا
Wa qulu li-nasi husna
Translation: And speak to people good [words].
Idfa' bi-llati hiya ahsan fa-idha alladhi baynaka wa baynahu 'adawatun ka'annahu waliyyun hamim
Translation: Repel [evil] by that which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend.
Authentic Hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'I have been sent to perfect good character.'
Explanation
This hadith states the very purpose of the Prophet's mission. Islam is not just about rituals — it is about becoming a better person with beautiful character. Every teaching of Islam aims to improve our character.
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The most beloved of you to me and the closest to me on the Day of Resurrection will be the best of you in character. And the most disliked of you to me and the farthest from me on the Day of Resurrection will be the most arrogant, the talkative, and the boastful.'
Explanation
Good character is not optional — it is directly tied to our relationship with the Prophet ﷺ on the Day of Judgment. Those with the best character will be closest to him, while the arrogant and boastful will be far.
Good character (Akhlaq) is the heart of Islam. The Prophet ﷺ was sent to perfect good character, and his life is our example. A Muslim with beautiful character is beloved to Allah and to people. We should strive every day to be truthful, kind, patient, humble, forgiving, and trustworthy.
