The Hadith of Jibril is one of the most important hadiths in all of Islam. It was narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), who said: 'While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one day, a man with extremely white clothes and extremely black hair came to us. No trace of travel was visible on him, yet none of us knew him. He sat down close to the Prophet ﷺ, resting his knees against his knees and placing his palms on his thighs, and said: "O Muhammad, tell me about Islam."' The Prophet ﷺ replied: 'Islam is to testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, to give zakat, to fast Ramadan, and to perform Hajj to the House if you are able.' The man said: 'You have spoken the truth.' Umar said: We were amazed that he asked the question and then confirmed the answer. The man then said: 'Tell me about Iman (faith).' The Prophet ﷺ replied: 'It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in divine decree (qadar), both the good and the bad of it.' Again the man said: 'You have spoken the truth.' Then the man said: 'Tell me about Ihsan.' The Prophet ﷺ replied: 'It is to worship Allah as though you see Him, for if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you.' The man then asked about the signs of the Day of Judgment. The Prophet ﷺ mentioned: 'The slave girl will give birth to her mistress, and you will see barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in the construction of tall buildings.' Then the man left. The Prophet ﷺ waited a while and then said: 'O Umar, do you know who the questioner was?' Umar said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'It was Jibril, who came to teach you your religion.' This hadith is remarkable because it summarizes the entire religion of Islam in one conversation. The three levels — Islam (submission), Iman (faith), and Ihsan (excellence) — form the complete framework of a Muslim's relationship with Allah. - Islam is the outward actions (the five pillars) - Iman is the inward beliefs (the six articles of faith) - Ihsan is the highest spiritual state — worshipping Allah with complete awareness of His presence This hadith teaches us that our religion is not just about actions or beliefs alone — it is about both, elevated to the highest level of excellence and awareness of Allah.

Translation: Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets.
Authentic Hadith
Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) narrated: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Islam is to testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, to give zakat, to fast Ramadan, and to perform Hajj. Iman is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and divine decree. Ihsan is to worship Allah as though you see Him, for if you do not see Him, indeed He sees you.'
Explanation
This is the complete Hadith of Jibril. It was the angel Jibril himself who came in human form to teach the companions the foundations of Islam. This single hadith summarizes the entire religion.
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Ihsan is to worship Allah as though you see Him, for if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you.'
Explanation
This definition of Ihsan has two levels: the highest is worshipping Allah as if you see Him (a state of spiritual excellence), and the second (for those who cannot reach that) is the constant awareness that Allah sees them at all times.
The Hadith of Jibril teaches us that Islam is a complete religion encompassing actions (Islam), beliefs (Iman), and spiritual excellence (Ihsan). True religion means doing the right actions, holding the right beliefs, and doing everything with the awareness that Allah is always watching us.
