Lesson & Story

Tawhid means the Oneness of Allah. It is the most important belief in Islam. When a person becomes Muslim, they declare 'La ilaha illa Allah' — there is no god but Allah. This simple yet powerful statement is the foundation of everything in Islam. Scholars of Islam have categorized Tawhid into three types to help us understand it better: 1. Tawhid ar-Rububiyyah (Oneness of Lordship): This means believing that Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer, and Lord of everything. He alone gives life and death, provides sustenance, and controls everything in the universe. No one shares in His Lordship. 2. Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah (Oneness of Worship): This means believing that Allah alone deserves to be worshipped. All prayers, supplications, sacrifices, and acts of worship must be directed to Allah alone — not to idols, saints, prophets, or anyone else. This is the category that the Messengers primarily called people to. 3. Tawhid al-Asma' wa Sifat (Oneness of Names and Attributes): This means believing in all the names and attributes that Allah has given Himself in the Quran and through His Prophet ﷺ, without altering them, denying them, or comparing them to creation. 'There is nothing like unto Him' (Surah Ash-Shura 42:11). The opposite of Tawhid is shirk — associating partners with Allah. Shirk is the greatest sin in Islam. Allah says: 'Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.' (Surah An-Nisa 4:48) Shirk can be major (like worshipping idols) or minor (like showing off in worship). Both are dangerous, but major shirk takes a person out of Islam. Understanding and practicing Tawhid perfectly is the path to Paradise. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever says La ilaha illa Allah sincerely will enter Paradise.'

Qur'an Verses

Surah Al-Ikhlas (112:1-4) · Ayah 1-4

Qul huwa Allahu ahad. Allahu as-samad. Lam yalid wa lam yulad. Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad.

Translation: Say, 'He is Allah, [who is] One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born. Nor is there to Him any equivalent.'

Surah An-Nisa (4:48) · Ayah 48

إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَن يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَن يَشَاءُ

Inna Allaha la yaghfiru an yushraka bihi wa yaghfiru ma duna dhalika li-man yasha

Translation: Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.

Surah Ash-Shura (42:11) · Ayah 11

لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ ۖ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْبَصِيرُ

Laysa ka-mithlihi shay'un wa huwa as-sami'u al-basir

Translation: There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.

Authentic Hadith

Musnad al-Bazzar (Sahih li-ghayrihi)

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever says La ilaha illa Allah sincerely will enter Paradise.' It was asked: 'What is its sincerity?' He said: 'That this statement saves you from what is forbidden.'

Explanation

Saying the Shahadah is not just about words — it means living a life where we truly worship Allah alone and avoid what He has forbidden. The sincerity of our faith is shown through our actions.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6373 & Sahih Muslim 2856

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The right of Allah upon His servants is that they should worship Him and not associate anything with Him.'

Explanation

Allah's greatest right over us is to worship Him alone without associating any partners. This is the core of Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah and the purpose of our existence.
