Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) was one of the earliest companions to accept Islam. He was known for his honesty, gentleness, and strong faith. The Prophet ﷺ gave him a unique title: 'Amin al-Ummah' — the Trustworthy of the Ummah (Muslim community). Abu Ubaydah was from the Quraysh tribe, the same tribe as the Prophet ﷺ. He participated in all the major battles: Badr, Uhud, Khandaq, and others. At the Battle of Uhud, the Prophet ﷺ was surrounded by enemies. Abu Ubaydah fought bravely to protect the Prophet. When two rings from the Prophet's helmet became lodged in his cheek, Abu Ubaydah used his front teeth to pull them out. He lost his teeth in the process, but the Prophet ﷺ was safe. He was known as the 'man without front teeth' after that. When the Prophet ﷺ sent a delegation to meet the Christian leader of Syria, he chose Abu Ubaydah as the leader. During the expedition, the Prophet ﷺ described him: 'For every people there is a trustworthy one, and the trustworthy one of this Ummah is Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah.' During the caliphate of Abu Bakr and Umar, Abu Ubaydah became a brilliant military commander. He led the Muslim armies in Syria and Palestine. He conquered Damascus and other major cities with wisdom and justice. Commander Khalid ibn al-Walid once served under Abu Ubaydah without complaint, showing the respect Abu Ubaydah commanded. Despite his power and success, Abu Ubaydah was incredibly humble. When Umar (RA) visited him in Syria, he expected to see a powerful general living in luxury. Instead, he found Abu Ubaydah living in a simple house, wearing simple clothes. Umar wept and said: 'Allah has made us brothers in Islam, and Islam has elevated us.' Abu Ubaydah replied: 'O Umar, I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Whoever is granted wealth should keep it for the Hereafter, and whoever is given power should use it with humility.'' Abu Ubaydah died in 639 CE during a plague in Syria. His death was a great loss. Umar (RA) said: 'If Abu Ubaydah were alive, I would have made him the caliph.' This shows the immense trust and respect Abu Ubaydah had among the companions.
