Lesson & Story

Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was one of the most powerful and influential companions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Before accepting Islam, Umar was a fierce opponent of the Muslims. He was strong, tall, and feared by many. One day, Umar set out to kill the Prophet ﷺ, angry at the spread of Islam. But on his way, he learned that his own sister, Fatima, had accepted Islam. He went to her house in fury. When he heard verses of the Quran being recited, his heart softened. He read the verses and accepted Islam on the spot. His conversion was a great victory for the Muslims — the Prophet ﷺ and the Muslims were finally able to pray openly at the Ka'bah. Umar was given the title 'Al-Faruq' — the one who distinguishes truth from falsehood. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'O Allah, strengthen Islam with Umar ibn al-Khattab.' Umar became the second caliph after Abu Bakr. His reign lasted 10 years (634-644 CE). Under his leadership, Islam spread rapidly — Persia, Egypt, Syria, and Jerusalem were opened. He established the Islamic calendar (Hijri), created government systems, built courts, and ensured justice for everyone, Muslim and non-Muslim alike. Umar was famous for his justice. He used to patrol the streets of Madinah at night, carrying bread on his shoulders to feed the poor. Once he found a woman and her children starving. He cooked food for them himself and sat until they were full. He said: 'What will you say to Allah if these people die of hunger while you are their leader?' Umar was so humble that he said: 'If a mule stumbles in Iraq, I fear that Allah will ask me why I did not pave the road for it.' He lived simply, wore patched clothes, and ate simple food despite ruling a vast empire. Umar was assassinated in 644 CE while leading the Fajr prayer. His dying words were about completing the prayer. He was buried next to the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr.
