Lesson & Story

Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was the closest companion of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. His real name was Abdullah, but he was known as Abu Bakr. He was the first man to accept Islam. Abu Bakr was called 'as-Siddiq' which means 'the truthful one.' This title was given to him because when the Prophet ﷺ told people about his miraculous Night Journey (Isra and Mi'raj) from Makkah to Jerusalem and up to the heavens, many people doubted it. But Abu Bakr immediately said, 'If he said it, then it is true.' His unwavering belief earned him the title as-Siddiq. Abu Bakr was very generous. He freed many enslaved Muslims, including Bilal (RA), by paying for their freedom. During the expedition of Tabuk, he brought all his wealth and possessions to the Prophet ﷺ. When the Prophet asked what he left for his family, he said, 'I left Allah and His Messenger for them.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'If I were to take a close friend (Khalil) from my nation, I would take Abu Bakr, but the brotherhood of Islam is better.' When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ passed away, the Muslims chose Abu Bakr as the first caliph (leader). As caliph, he led the Muslims for two years. He compiled the Quran into one book and preserved it. He was known for his humility, kindness, and deep knowledge of Islam. Abu Bakr passed away in 634 CE and was buried next to the Prophet ﷺ. His daughter Aisha (RA) was the Prophet's beloved wife, making Abu Bakr even closer to the Prophet ﷺ.
