Lesson & Story

Prophet Isa (peace be upon him), known as Jesus in English, was one of the greatest prophets of Allah. His mother was Maryam (Mary), one of the most honored women in Islam. Maryam was a pious woman who devoted herself to the worship of Allah. One day, the angel Jibril came to her and gave her the news that she would have a son. She was amazed because she was not married. But Allah's power is beyond human understanding — Isa was born by Allah's command, without a father, just as Allah created Adam without a father or mother. Allah gave Isa many miracles to prove his prophethood. As a baby, Isa spoke from the cradle to defend his mother. He could heal the sick, give sight to the blind, and even bring the dead back to life — all by Allah's permission. He could also make birds out of clay and breathe life into them, by Allah's will. Isa's message was simple: worship Allah alone. He taught the Injil (Gospel) and guided the Children of Israel. But many people rejected him. The leaders plotted against him. Allah raised Isa up to Himself, saving him from their plot. The person who was made to look like Isa was caught instead, and Isa was not killed or crucified. In Islam, Isa is a beloved prophet of Allah, not the son of God. Allah says in the Quran that it does not befit His majesty to have a son. Isa will return near the end of times to defeat the Antichrist (Dajjal) and establish justice on Earth. Muslims love and respect Isa and his mother Maryam deeply.

Qur'an Verses

Surah Al Imran (3:59) · Ayah 59

Inna mathala 'Isa 'inda Allahi ka-mathali Adam khalaqahu min turabin thumma qala lahu kun fa-yakun

Translation: Indeed, the example of Isa to Allah is like that of Adam. He created him from dust; then He said to him, 'Be,' and he was.

Surah An-Nisa (4:157) · Ayah 157

Wa qawlihim inna qatalna al-Masih 'Isa ibna Maryama rasula Allahi wa ma qataluhu wa ma salabuhu wa lakin shubbiha lahum

Translation: And [for] their saying, 'Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Isa, the son of Maryam, the messenger of Allah.' And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them.

Authentic Hadith

Sahih al-Bukhari 3448 & Sahih Muslim 155

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, the son of Mary (Isa) will shortly descend amongst you people as a just ruler.'

Explanation

This hadith tells us that Prophet Isa (AS) will return to Earth near the end of times as a just leader. This is an important belief in Islam.

Musnad Ahmad (Sahih)

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'None is more entitled to be mentioned in the sight of Allah on the Day of Resurrection as a result of a dispute than the people of the Book (Jews and Christians) regarding Isa, son of Maryam.'

Explanation

This shows that Prophet Isa's status is a major topic on the Day of Judgment, as some people elevated him too much and others wronged him.
