Lesson & Story

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was born in a community that worshipped idols. Even as a young boy, Ibrahim thought about who created the sun, the moon, and the stars. He realized that Allah is the only true God. Ibrahim tried to guide his people and his own father to worship Allah, but they refused. One day, while the people were away at a festival, Ibrahim went to the temple and destroyed all the idols except the biggest one. When the people returned and saw what happened, they were furious. They asked Ibrahim if he did it. Ibrahim said, 'Ask the big idol — maybe it did it!' But the people knew idols could not speak or act. The people decided to punish Ibrahim by throwing him into a huge fire. They built a massive fire and placed Ibrahim in a catapult. But Ibrahim had complete trust in Allah. As he was thrown into the fire, Allah commanded the fire to be cool and safe for Ibrahim. The fire did not burn him at all! Ibrahim is called 'Khalilullah' — the Friend of Allah. Later, Allah commanded Ibrahim and his son Ismail to rebuild the Ka'bah in Makkah. Ibrahim also had a beautiful dream where Allah commanded him to sacrifice his son Ismail. Both father and son were willing to obey Allah. But Allah replaced the sacrifice with a ram, showing that He tests His beloved servants. This event is remembered every year during Eid al-Adha.
